With high profile appearances from Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Kabaka Pyramid and Lila Iké, Kingston, Jamaica’s own prodigal son MORTIMER unleashed his profoundly introspective debut solo body of work, FROM WITHIN [OVERSTAND ENTERTAINMENT / EASY STAR RECORDS], this past September.

First things first, let’s hop into this single, “Bruises” — Tell me about this particular track; how did it come to fruition?

Some years ago, I had settled down to make some music as I usually do…I started laying the drums, and based on the texture of the drums at the time it made me start thinking about all the hardships we've faced as a people for some strange reason; all the Injustices, the prejudice, because of our skin color and how unfairly we've been treated because of it. I started thinking about how present this all is even in today's society. I also started thinking about our personal cuts and Bruises, both seen and unseen, both self inflicted and otherwise. I was angry and sad at the same time. Disappointed that we've failed to see how connected we are...to see how shabbily we've chosen to treat ourselves and each other, for the sake of power. How can we see ourselves above another? Who gave us that right? To determine who has rights and who should be ignored? Anyway, years later I shared this idea with Winta (James), and we began working on it. I'm super happy it's a part of my album, and blessed that Kabaka and Lila chose to join hearts in song with me.

Of course “Bruises” comes courtesy of your debut solo album, FROM WITHIN — Conceptually, what does this title represent both to and for you?

From Within for me, captures some of the questions I ask myself, many of the experiences I've had, the things I've seen and heard, the winds of my heart and mind. Being able to channel what I feel through the gift of music is amazing.

Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?

Something positive, whatever it may look or sound like to each person. Hope, love, connection reminders that we are all human; a perfection that dwells within what we may feel is imperfect.

Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from entertainment?

Lol, yes I do! It is my desire to act and to race cars. ‘Specially Rally! I actually have a car I've been working on to start with, and I've also been on the lookout for any roles I see pop up for screen. I also have the desire to visit Japan, especially to learn firsthand about the Samurai.

Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?

I see myself being blessed enough to still do what I love...I see myself being a much healthier version mentally and physically. It’s my hope that the music I make would've have already made it through the doors of many more hearts and homes. Having a close relationship with my kids, giving them something I never had with my father. I see myself more spiritually connected and aware. I see myself with all my dream cars, lol. A home I can call my own for the family I've created with my wife Tka. I see myself touring the world performing all the music I would’ve made, sharing parts of myself and contributing positively to this earth we call home for now…I could go on and on, but I'll stop here.

Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention?

Nah, there's nothing…but I would like to encourage everyone to keep their heads up. Take it a step at a time, and live even more than just being alive.
